PRINT IS DEAD BUT INK IS NOT

This thesis is centered around
the digital culture of tattoos.
I considered the larger cultural
context of tattooing in order to
think about how tattoos in the
past and present have cultural
significance and therefore are
an important part of digital
culture. The perspective of
designers and scientists can
help to achieve significance
in transferring tattoos into
the digital realm. The use of
the body as a medium will allow
tattoos to function as new kinds
of communication devices.

In the design I focused on the
concept of the body as a med-
ium. I created several pattern-
grids which are based on the
structure of the skin. These grids
are silkscreened on top of the
text with thermochromatic ink.
The reader needs to use his or
her own body to read the text.
